Immediacy of the debate

In December 2010 the Republic of Slovenia (Ministry of the Interior) in cooperation with IOM – International Organisation for Migration relocated to Maribor 8 persons with the refugee status from Malta trough the EU pilot project EUREMA. The pilot project should be an answer to the so called “immigration problem” leaded by the “burden sharing” principle of EU and result as a long term re-location strategy of immigrants in EU. A group of activists and researches working in Maribor monitor the implementation of the pilot project Eurema and with the 7 remaining refugees (on decided to leave Slovenia after 2 months), question the promises done by IOM on Malta and the reality of the integration process leaded by the Ministry of the Interior in Slovenia. The cooperation of activists, researchers and refugees will result in an informal grass-root study paper that will present the bottom up perspectives of the EU pilot project EUREMA and its case in/for Slovenia.

Aim of the debate
- To find other informal/grass-root initiatives that monitor the implementation of Eurema (Germany, France, Portugal, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Hungary, United Kingdom and Luxemburg).
- To light the Eurema process in other countries.
- To share experience of different grass-root initiatives of refugees across Europe.

Starting questions
- How is the Eurema project held in other countries?
- Can be a relocation (“burden sharing” principle) strategy the answer to the so called “immigration problem” of EU?
- Why are immigrants/refugees perceived as a burden by nation states and EU?
- How are integration programs actually successful?

Duration of discussion
11th of May 2012 – 11th of November 2012

Target publics
